Fall is undoubtedly one of the most scenic times of year in Aspen. The mountainsides are flooded with golden colors, and the weather is perfect for various outdoor activities. The Aspen trees start to show their new fall color once the shorter days of fall approach. Higher elevations begin the shift earlier with the cooler temperatures, while lower, more southern locations soon follow.

Best Time to See the Fall Foliage in Aspen

While it varies slightly from year to year based on weather and elevation, Aspen’s autumn foliage typically takes over around mid-September and lasts until mid to late October. The changes also depend on the health of the trees, environmental factors like drought or increased moisture, and latitude.

People who love leaf peeping or capturing that beauty in photos look to view these golden beauties every year during this period. If you time it just right, the entire mountainside will be flushed in a stunning hue. It’s well worth the visit.

Where to Leaf Peep in Aspen

The gorgeous bright yellow glow of the Aspen leaves are probably the biggest draw to the area in the fall. If you plan to visit the fall foliage, here are a few of our favorite places to check out.

The good news is you don’t have to go far to take in this awe-inspiring view.

  • Ashcroft — Regularly named one of the top places in the state to view the changing of leaves, this charming little ghost town remains one of the most iconic visits in Aspen. In the fall, there are tours available for visitors at a low cost of $5. It’s well worth the small fee to take in the autumn splendor of the area.
  • Castle Creek Road — One of our favorite routes to check out the autumn leaves, Castle Creek Rd starts in Aspen and climbs in elevation for around 13.2 miles. The views on this road are stunning, with plenty of chances to pull over and take in the amazing scenery. The road leads to Ashcroft or past it for a nice hike along the Castle Creek Trailhead.
  • Independence Pass — Always one of the most beautiful drives in the state, Independence Pass truly reaches its peak in the fall. This seasonal shortcut to and from Aspen is a climb to 12,095 ft with views of stunning vistas at every turn. Just before the summit, the panoramic valley views are stupendous, with many scenic overlooks flooded with golden aspens. The pass generally closes in November, but it can be enjoyed through the peak of the leaf changing.
  • Maroon Bells — Always a visual treat, the Maroon Bells area is no exception in the fall. The Aspen lined Maroon Creek Rd is a fantastic hike or ride with breathtaking views to the grand finale—the iconic Maroon Bells and crystal clear water of Maroon Lake. This area is popular all year long, but it’s a must when visiting Aspen.
  • Rio Grande Trail — If you are a cycling fan, the Rio Grande Trail is a multi-use paved trail that runs for 42 miles between Aspen and Glenwood. This relatively flat trail runs through meadows with the gorgeous mountain range as its backdrop, making for an absolutely stupendous view of the glowing aspens. There are places to stop for lunch or take in the sites along the way.
  • Downtown Aspen — The beauty of staying downtown is that you needn’t go far to view the patchwork of color this area is known for in the fall. Parks and open spaces are prime spots for leaf peeping, while local restaurants have patios with some of the best views. You can also take a shorter hike up Smuggler’s Mountain to view downtown, Independence Pass, and the Roaring Fork Valley.

Things to Do in Aspen in the Fall

Of course, leaf peeping is popular this time of year, but fall is a beautiful time to visit Aspen for various reasons. Bluebird days and moderate temperatures are followed by cool, crisp nights, making it the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors. Fall attracts fewer people than the summer and winter months, making the town easier to navigate.

Here is a list of some of our other favorite activities to do in the fall in Aspen:

  • Hike — It goes without saying that hiking is one of the best outdoor activities you can do while visiting the Aspen area. Hiking in the fall means exploring the outdoors in the cool fall air while seeing the seasonal colors. It’s a great time to get outside and enjoy the area before the frost settles and ski crowds become plentiful.
  • Bike — Our favorite leaf peeping trails (listed above) are also viewable by bike for biking enthusiasts. Biking allows you to breathe in the clean, crisp air and make time for stops for lunch or photos of the surrounding beauty.
  • Festivals/Events — If you are looking to immerse yourself in cultural events during your fall visit, Aspen offers world-class experiences for every season. Check out our faves and the Aspen Chamber’s Event Calendar for upcoming events.
    • Aspen Filmfest — A favorite of film lovers, this annual fall festival is brought to you by Aspen Film. With a mission to enlighten, enrich, educate, and entertain through film, Aspen Film showcases narrative and documentary features, award-worthy previews, and independent films to audiences.
    • Snowmass Balloon Festival — The Snowmass Balloon Festival has been a local tradition for nearly 50 years. This iconic festival features three days of 30+ balloons launched in the air with the mountains and sunrise as their backdrop. Come check out why this festival has been a long-standing tradition with locals.
    • Solo Flight: New Works Festival — Theatre Aspen presents an annual week-long developmental festival of one-person shows in their beginning stages. This festival celebrates actors and directors and showcases a variety of diverse works to their audiences.

As well as these performances, this festival features other events, including talkbacks, discussions, panels, and special receptions.
